This year’s 15th Annual Plein Air Paint Out offers a unique opportunity to paint alongside professional artists from across Alabama through small-group, Faculty-Hosted Workshops held at scenic locations around the community!

Participants will select their preferred artist and location, bring their own supplies, and paint while learning from top plein air artists—Barbara Davis, John Guernsey, Craig Reynolds, and Perry Austin. The workshops will rotate between Anne’s Farm, Grace Episcopal Church, The Waters on October 7-8.

Each participant may register for one class per day with an artist. All mediums are welcome, though some painting experience is required. An 11×14” canvas is required for all workshops. To reserve your selection(s), please review available time slots and call Town Hall at (334) 272-9883.

Workshop Details:

  • Each workshop is $35. After confirming class schedule with Town Hall staff, you will be sent an invoice via email to pay the balance based on the number of classes you registered for.

  • Participants must have some knowledge of painting, but, can be new to plein air painting.

  • Participants must bring their supplies: easel, seat, art panels, paints, medium, brushes, palette, paper towels, a bag for trash, and water.

  • Faculty will focus on plein air techniques. Participants may use any medium with which they are comfortable.

  • Only 10 students permitted per any 3 hour workshop.

Faculty Biographies:

  • Perry Austin: With his roots in rural Alabama, Perry has an innate love of the landscape both as a painter and a fisherman. His professional affiliations include Oil Painters of America and Plein Air Painters of the Southeast. His work resides in museums and personal collections across the country and has been published by Southwest Art and American Art Collector. Perry happily resides and paints in the Alabama hills at Box Turtle Farm with his wife, Carol.

  • Barbara Davis: In 2004, Barbara began painting en plein air and it and opened many doors to meet other artists and join painting groups.  She has taken workshops from such wonderful artists as Roger Dale Brown, Perry Austin, Mark Horton, Christopher Groves, and other members of Plein Air Painters of the Southeast and the members of the Cumberland Society of Painters, and the late Gordon Wetmore.  Barbara has since been in numerous exhibitions, won numerous awards and has been published in several national magazines.

  • John Guernsey: Originally from Southern California, contemporary landscape artist John Guernsey moved to Georgia in 1993 and began a full-time art career in 2006. Developing his drawing skills in college courses and workshop study, he now concentrates primarily on landscape painting.  Most of his work is en plein air, or alla prima, although he is gradually increasing the output of larger studio paintings.  His work reveals a keen observance of atmosphere and light and is inspired by nature, city life, and architecture.  Mr. Guernsey maintains a busy schedule of workshops in the southeast and regularly participates in nationally ranked plein air festivals throughout the country. Some of his recent plein air awards include ‘Best of Show’:  Cashiers Plein Air 2022,  Olmsted Park GA 2019, Los Gatos CA 2019, 2017, and Richmond VA  2013, with awards of excellence at Carmel CA, 2017, 2016, and 2014.

  • Craig Reynolds: Born in Gadsden, Alabama, discovered his artistic passion under the guidance of his father.  In 1984, Craig took the plunge into professional painting while simultaneously pursuing a career, transitioning into a full-time professional artist in 2005. Craig has regularly participated in plein air competitions and painting expeditions across the United States and beyond. His artistic journey is marked by a profound connection to nature and a dedication to passing on his skills. Craig’s work is represented in galleries in Maryland, Florida, and Alabama. He is a member of the Plein Air Painters of the SouthEast (PAP-SE), National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society, American Impressionist Society, Oil Painters of America, and the American Society of Marine Artists.
