The Mission: Two-Way Communication
The primary purpose of the Neighborhood Leaders Committee is to bridge the gap between municipal government and individual neighborhoods. It is designed to be a two-way street:
From Town Hall to the Neighborhood: When the town has critical updates regarding infrastructure, safety, upcoming zoning, or community events, they pass that information directly to the Neighborhood Leaders. Those leaders then blast it out to their respective Homeowners Associations (HOAs) or neighborhood groups.
From the Neighborhood to Town Hall: Conversely, if a specific neighborhood is experiencing an issue—such as a blind spot at an intersection, a sudden influx of stray animals, or drainage concerns—the Neighborhood Leader brings those localized issues directly to the town’s leadership to be addressed.
Who is on the Committee?
The committee is made up of volunteer representatives from each participating neighborhood within the Pike Road town limits.
They are often HOA board members, but they can be any civic-minded resident who acts as the designated “point person” for their street or subdivision.
They meet regularly with Mayor Gordon Stone, town council members, and municipal department heads (like planning and public works) to stay aligned on the town’s trajectory.
Key Responsibilities & Initiatives
1. Welcome and New Resident Integration
When people move into one of Pike Road’s many master-planned communities, the Neighborhood Leaders are often the ones who facilitate “welcome” initiatives. They ensure new residents understand town services, how to register for schools, and how to get plugged into community events.
2. Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness
Neighborhood Leaders work closely with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department and the Pike Road Volunteer Fire Protection Authority. They help coordinate neighborhood watch programs and ensure that in the event of severe weather or emergencies, vital safety information is distributed rapidly to every household.
3. Gathering Input for Major Projects
Whenever Pike Road undergoes a major shift—such as updating its Comprehensive Plan or launching the joint Parks and Recreation Master Plan—the Neighborhood Leaders Committee is mobilized. They are responsible for distributing community surveys and encouraging their neighbors to participate in town halls, ensuring that their neighborhood’s voice is represented in the town’s future growth.
4. Fostering Friendly Competition
The committee helps promote town-wide neighborhood participation in local traditions, like the annual autumn Hey, Look at Us! hay bale decorating contest, encouraging neighborhood pride and camaraderie.
Why it Matters
In many fast-growing towns, residents can quickly feel disconnected from local government. Pike Road uses the Neighborhood Leaders Committee to ensure that even as the town expands into a major municipality, it retains the responsive, neighborly feel of a small village.
